Things to do, and interesting facts
Things to do:
Hunt For Dragonstones: The stream has long been a hot spot for mythical dragonstones. (Septarian Nodules) Purported to have mythical powers, dragonstones are actually a unique fossil formation. Typically a very smooth rock, which often has a crackled "alligator-skin" texture.
Pick Wild Blackberries: Typically mid June through early July, depending on weather, wild blackberries will ripen, and can be picked at will by our guests.
View Fireflies Synchronous Ascension: Between June and September (somewhat dependent on weather) hundreds of thousands of fireflies can be spotted in our meadows just after sunset. They will twinkle all night, but typically right when the light starts fading is the best time to see them ascending from the grasses in the meadow and lighting their lights as they ascend. This often happens in a synchronous way.
View Sunset from the ridgeline at the Butterfly Trail's End
Kayaking/Paddleboarding: We have complimentary kayaks and paddle-boards with an assortment of life Jackets. We recommend ot entering the water when it is high, or muddy, but the rest of the time you can go upstream as far as you like. Depending on water levels, you may need to wade and tow your kayak adjacent the barn to reach the long stretch of shaded calm water where you can paddle and have a good chance of seeing Otters, Beaver, Muskrat, Deer and countelss waterfowl. A guest favorite are our resident great blue herons, a giant one, and smaller one, and also the Kingfishers.
Walk or ride e-bikes upstream along the shaded creekside trail til you reach the pinkish red gate. (we also have various solar lights placed along this trail, making it a fun trail to walk after sunset)
Walk the Butterfly trail through one of our meadows. Summer is a great time to see millions of wildflowers and lots of butterflies. Late June, and early July is the best time to spot Monarchs lighting on milkweed as they make their migration to Mexico.
Walk or ride e-bikes down the one lane country road to the bridge for scenic photos.
Historical Snippets:
There's a lot of history here, there was a large mill on the property back in the 1800's, and countless arrowheads, and colonial era and beyond musketballs etc have been found by the family who farmed this land in the 1900's. If you like history, ask us about the assassination attempt and the boots.
The Greenbrier valley was the hunting grounds for the Seneca people and children hoeing the cornfield here in the 1900's would find arrowheads.
